Thanks to all of our contributors and incredible volunteer team for making the Soldiers’ Angels/Memorial Day Collection a HUGE success!
Over 3,200 items were generously donated by volunteers across Los Angeles. These much needed items have been sent to wounded troops recuperating at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where President Obama made a visit this past Friday. The donations included socks, pj’s, underwear, hoodies sweats, blankets, pillows and hundreds of pre-paid phone minutes. We also sent over 400 handwritten cards and letters full of encouragement and appreciation for our troops.
Heartfelt appreciation to the ninety-two volunteers who joined us last Saturday at Culver Studios to sort, count and pack the donations. We were so overwhelmed by volunteers that the work went quickly, and folks then sat down at our letter-writing stations and composed all those heartfelt cards and letters to the troops, as well as to the doctors and staff at LRMC to thank them for all they do. Everyone who participated felt deeply gratified at helping our wounded heroes, and really moved to see how many people pitched in to provide the much needed comfort items for our troops.
Special thanks to Culver Studios for giving us the space and total access to the lot to stage this event, which we couldn’t have done without this gracious donation. We would also like to thank State Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, Assemblyman Ted Lieu, State Senator Fran Pavley, U.S. Congresswoman Jane Harman and LA City Councilmembers Eric Garcetti, Herb Wesson, Bill Rosendahl and Janice Hahn and their staffs for so generously opening their offices to us to serve as donation collection points, We are also grateful to our friends at Mira Costa High School (Manhattan Beach), the City of Manhattan Beach, the Democratic Action Center (Torrance) and Urban Escape (Venice) for providing additional drop off locations. Many thanks to Fedex for once again donating the packing bags and to Penske for providing the truck we needed to transport the mountain of items to the Soldiers’ Angels shipping warehouse.
An even bigger and better event is being planned in honor of Veteran’s Day. We will be reaching out to you to ask you to organize collections in your neighborhoods, workplaces and schools. If you would like to volunteer for this upcoming event and become part of our team, just reply to this email!
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND SUPPORT!!!
