LAG4O Voter Guide for Nov 2nd 2010

LAG4O Voter Guide

STATEWIDE PROPOSITIONS

Proposition 19 – YES – Control and Tax Cannabis
No Brainer.  Makes it legal, safe and adds some much needed revenue to the State
Proposition 20 – NO – Congressional Redistricting
On odd attempt to convolute the redistricting even more by adding it to Congressional districts
Proposition 21 – YES – California State Parks Initiative
Proposition 22 – YES – Prohibits the state from using property tax and gas tax money slated for cities, counties and special districts
This is not a simple issue.  Cities are sick of having transportation funds hijacked by the state to balance its budget.  We think this is a terrific analysis from the LOA.
Proposition 23 – NO – Stop Dirty Energy Proposition
Prop 23 is funded by out-of-state oil companies to esentially overturn  AB 32 (Clean Air Bill).  It eliminates clean energy standards that would cut air pollution and protect the public health.  Proponents say this measure is needed to preserve jobs, but in fact it jeopardizes hundreds of thousands ofclean-energy jobs.
YES on Proposition 23 is supported by:
Texas Oil Companies: Tesoro, Valero
Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association
National Federation of Independent Business/California
United Association Journeymen & Apprentices of the Plumbing & Pipe Fitting Industry
Yes on Prop 23, California Jobs Initiative
NO on Proposition 23 is supported by:
American Lung Association in California
UCLA School of Public Health
California AARP

Department of Economics, UCSB
No on Prop 23, Stop the Dirty Energy Proposition
Proposition 24 – YES – The Tax Fairness Act
Proposition 24 would repeal the corporate tax cuts that were passed in closed-door budget deals of 2008-09.  These tax breaks cost approximately $1.3 billion in revenue to the state, while benefiting only two percent of California’s businesses.
YES on Proposition 24 is supported by:
California Teachers Association
League of Women Voters of California
California Tax Reform Association
California Federation of Teachers
Congress of California Seniors
Yes on Prop 24, the Tax Fairness Act
NO on Proposition 24 is supported by:
California Taxpayers’ Association
California Small Business Alliance
California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce
Seniors Coalition
No on 24, Stop the Jobs Tax
Proposition 25 – YES – On-Time Budget Act
LAG4O is a huge supporter of this initiative.  We believe it to be  an important first step to bringing our state back to sanity and we applaud our friend Andrew for bringing it to the voters!  Changes the vote for the state budget and related legislation from 2/3 to a simple majority.  In the past, a small minority held out and jeopardized important state services and payments, and forced state borrowing at unfavorable rates of interest. Provides that if the Legislature fails to pass a budget bill by June 15, all members of the Legislature will forfeit salary/reimbursements until they pass a budget bill.
YES on Proposition 25 is supported by:
California Federation of Teachers
United Nurses Associations of California
California Alliance for Retired Americans

Stop Hidden Taxes, No on 25/Yes on 26
Proposition 26 – NO – Two-Thirds Legislative Vote on Fees and Charges
Prop 26 was placed on the ballot by the oil, tobacco, and alcohol industries to stick ordinary taxpayers with the bill for the environmental, health and safety hazards they cause. Prop 26 would amend the Constitution, requiring a 2/3 vote, rather than simple majority, to enact fees on industries that pollute our air, dirty our water, and endanger our health.
YES on Proposition 26 is supported by:
California Taxpayers’ Association
California Chamber of Commerce
Small Business Action Committee
Nisei Farmers League
California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Proposition 27 – YES – Eliminating State Commission on Redistricting
Prop 11, the orginal redistricting bill, has turned out to be the giant waste of time and money that it had been laid out to be. Let’s stop wasting everyones time.  Here is link to Ballotpedia for a more comprehensive breakdown.
